Holly Flynn Floats a Killer Theory

Holly Flynn teaches history at Pasadena City College, comes from old Pasadena money, and has never quite felt she belongs to either world. Her mind works differently from everyone around her, catching the small wrong details other people walk right past, and the very thing that has always made her feel like an outsider turns out to be the thing that lets her see what really happened. With her Bernese mountain dog Saga at her side, Holly grows into the role of amateur sleuth in a town where the gardens are perfect and the secrets are buried deep.

Illustration of Pasadena, California, the setting of the Holly Flynn series

Pasadena sits at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains, about ten miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles, and it has never behaved like a suburb. It has its own downtown in Old Pasadena, its own grand houses from the Arts and Crafts era, its own gardens and museums, and once a year its own parade. The Rose Parade has rolled down Colorado Boulevard every New Year's Day since 1890, with one exception: when January 1 falls on a Sunday, the parade moves to Monday, a tradition kept since 1893. Locals know the real party is the night before, when families stake out the curb with lawn chairs and thermoses and wait for the first float at eight in the morning.

In the book

Holly Flynn Floats a Theory opens in Rose Parade week, when the whole city is looking at the flowers and nobody is watching a history teacher and her dog. The streets, gardens, and traditions you can visit here are the places where her first case unfolds.
